Crossing a billionaire had been even more ghastly than she’d expected, Jacinda thought, still in the process of straightening up the kitchen counter.It was past ten in the evening, and she was restless. Outside, the city lights twinkled, and inside, the Christmas decorations cast a warm glow.

Most visitors to New York would be enjoying themselves right now. It was the season when thousands of tourists flocked to the city for holiday shopping and shows, filling restaurants and hotels, and spilling into the streets and onto double-decker tour buses.

But Jacinda knew her feelings had nothing to do with the season, and everything to do with a certain billionaire.

She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment as she remembered her confrontation with Gage two days ago.

She’d made a mess of things. She’d gone about it all wrong from the beginning.

She should have confessed to Gage who she was before he’d found out himself in the worst possible way.

She winced as she thought back to how angry Gage had been.

Then again, she tried telling herself, even if she had come clean, Gage would have been just as furious at being duped. The only thing she could have hoped for was that when she begged for his help, he would have been swayed a little by the fact she’d come forward by choice.

She placed a couple of pots back in the cupboard.

As it was, she’d bargained with the devil.

I prefer the term mistress.

His words came back to her, reverberating in her mind, as they had for the last forty-eight hours.

She’d sold herself in exchange for his help.

“Billionaire’s mistress.” She tried out the title on her tongue.

Never, never, never in her wildest dreams would she have thought she’d acquire that title. But then again, six months ago, she hadn’t known any billionaires.

If only her friends and colleagues could see her now.

Of course, her family would be aghast. One daughter dead, and now the other a kept woman.

Her family would think she was out of her league with Gage Lattimer—which was, of course, true.

Gage.

She couldn’t believe his cold-bloodedness.

He’d propositioned her with cool calculation.

She could well understand now how he’d made hundreds of millions betting on and trading in start-up companies. He had a quick, analytical mind, true, but he was also one cool customer.

While she’d been doing her best not to fall for him these past months, he’d apparently been unmoved. As soon as her real identity had come out, he’d switched to propositioning her, without missing a beat.

She was mortified…and angry.

Oh, she knew she wasn’t an innocent party herself, but even though her head was telling her to be rational, her heart couldn’t help feeling hurt.

Had their night of passion meant nothing more to him than a roll between the sheets with the hired help? Apparently so, since he’d handed her a take-it-or-leave-it offer.
